Impressive, but not as amazing as expected. : JBL Cinema 300 5.1 Speaker System (Black)
I just replaced my old Jensen JHT525 5.1 Home Theater Speasker system (purchased back in 2003) with this brand new JBL Cinema 300 system. The JBL Cinema 300 5.1 system has more than twice the wattage of my old speaker system and the satellite speakers each feature a better design than the tiny satellites on the Jensen system. On paper, the JBL Cinema 300 is a better speaker system in every measurable way.
Nevertheless, after swapping out the speakers (and upgrading to a higher spec Sony HDMI receiver) I could barely tell the difference between the new speakers and my old speakers. The JBL subwoofer delivers noticeably more "thumping bass" than my old subwoofer ... thanks in no small part to the fact that the JBL subwoofer uses a downward-firing driver inside the subwoofer enclosure. While it's nice to "feel" the bass, it only makes an impression when I'm watching movies/TV or playing XBox 360 games with lots of bass in the soundtrack.
I don't want to give the impression that these JBL speakers are bad. On the contrary, these speakers are GREAT ... but so were my old speakers. I guess I falsely assumed that I'd hear twice the audio experience with these speakers since they have twice (or more) the level of performance on paper compared to my old speakers (the same goes for my new receiver).
My wife had a similar reaction to these speakers. After I connected the new speakers to our HDTV and turned on a movie she immediately looked at the speakers with a puzzled look on her face and then turned to me and said, "I can't really hear a difference." After I drew her attention to the subwoofer she acknowledged that you can "feel" the bass more with the new JBL speakers, but other than that the sound experience is similar to my 8-year-old home theater speakers.
Bottom line, if you want premium home theater speakers these are a great choice. However, if you already have a good set of premium home theater speakers you might not notice much of a difference even though these JBL Cinema 300 speakers use the latest and greatest technology.
